New England Patriots Free Agency 2026

New England came into free agency with the most cap space in the NFL and a front office ready to spend it. After years of cautious rebuilding, the Patriots made a decisive pivot toward surrounding young quarterback Drake Maye with legitimate weapons. The Tee Higgins signing was the headline, but the real story is the depth of investment across every position group. From Dalton Schultz at tight end to Marcus Williams at safety, this is the most aggressive Patriots offseason in over a decade.

Key Signings

Player Pos Contract Details
Tee Higgins WR 4 yr / $72M The prize of Patriots free agency. Higgins gives Drake Maye a true WR1 for the first time, a 6-foot-4 contested-catch specialist who posted back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons in Cincinnati.
Marcus Williams S 3 yr / $33M Ball-hawking free safety who had 15 interceptions over his last three healthy seasons. Immediately becomes the best defensive back on the roster and the quarterback of the secondary.
Dalton Schultz TE 3 yr / $27M Reliable pass-catching tight end who fills a massive void in the middle of the field. Caught 60+ passes in three of his last four seasons and gives Maye a safety valve on third downs.
Charvarius Ward CB 3 yr / $36M Shutdown outside corner from the 49ers who was one of the best in the league before a personal leave in 2025. At 29, he still has elite press-man coverage ability.
Grady Jarrett DT 2 yr / $18M Veteran interior pass rusher who can collapse the pocket against the run and the pass. Brings leadership and consistency to a defensive line that lacked both last season.
Germaine Pratt LB 2 yr / $12M Former Bengals linebacker who adds tackling and instincts to the second level. A no-nonsense run defender who should start immediately in the base defense.
D.J. Humphries OT 1 yr / $8M Veteran left tackle on a one-year deal as a bridge starter. If healthy, he is a clear upgrade. The short commitment keeps the door open for a drafted replacement.
Robert Woods WR 1 yr / $3.5M Experienced possession receiver who adds locker room leadership and reliable hands. Slots in as the WR3 behind Higgins and DeMario Douglas.
Shaquille Leonard LB 1 yr / $4M Former All-Pro attempting a full comeback after neck surgery. High-upside, low-risk signing that could pay off enormously if Leonard returns to form.

Key Departures

Linebacker

Ja'Whaun Bentley

Long-time defensive captain signed with the Chargers after New England declined to match. His absence will be felt in the locker room more than on the stat sheet.

Wide Receiver

Kendrick Bourne

Released after his cap number became untenable. Bourne was a fan favorite but the Tee Higgins signing made his roster spot redundant from a production standpoint.

Safety

Kyle Dugger

Traded to the Jaguars for a 2026 fourth-round pick. The Marcus Williams signing made Dugger expendable, and New England preferred to recoup draft capital.

Defensive Tackle

Davon Godchaux

Left for the Cowboys in unrestricted free agency. Grady Jarrett was targeted as a more disruptive interior replacement at a comparable cost.

Remaining Needs

Critical

Offensive Line

D.J. Humphries helps at left tackle, but the interior remains a concern. The Patriots need at least one starting-caliber guard, and the right tackle spot is unsettled. Expect significant draft investment in the trenches.

High Priority

Edge Rusher

New England still lacks a consistent double-digit sack threat. The pass rush relies heavily on scheme and stunts rather than individual talent. A first-round edge rusher remains in play.

Moderate

Running Back

Rhamondre Stevenson is the lead back but there is no proven backup behind him. A day-three draft pick or undrafted free agent could fill the RB2 role heading into camp.
